Past Tense #15: Lady and the pups
When we learned we shouldn't mess around with a mother and her children
(Varianta în limba română, la final)1
During those hot summer days, when the temperature hit 104 F, lacking air conditioning, we would hang out all the time at the nearby well and spray each other with water. Ostriches put their heads in the sand, chicken look for the shade of the trees, breathing heavily with their eyes closed like in delirium, and Lady, the lady-dog living around our apartment building, had dug a hole for herself under some block of concrete, close to the dispensary, right across the street from us.
She was brown, with big eyes and a pointy nose, and so thin that you could count her bones. She would come to us with her tail between her legs and stare at us until we brought her a piece of bread or something else to eat from our house. We also gave her milk, but she preferred the “Victoria” salami, which she swallowed almost whole.
Lady hadn’t come to the door of our building for a couple of days, as she used to, and we left her food next to the hole she had dug. She only came out to eat and then went back inside.
We kept wondering what would be the matter with her.
Is Lady sick, Coco?
No, Looloo, I think Lady has little pups!
OMG, pups?? Little pups? Let’s get them out!
I was the thinnest, the perfect candidate to fit in the hole, but since I had been stuck in that wardrobe...I got scared of closed spaces. I tried looking inside, but I quickly got my head out of the hole.
I’ll show you how it’s done, says Coco.
No, what if the dog bites you?! Leave them alone!, said Marius.
Nicusor lied down on the dry and drought-cracked earth and started pushing himself inside the dog’s hole in the ground.
He reached the pups and turned on the lantern:
Looloo, Marius, you won’t believe this! Lady has three pups: one is white and black, one is brown like her and one is black. But they don’t have eyes yet!
Me and Marius happily started shouting at him to get them out, but the dog started to growl…
Don’t be silly Lady, I won’t hurt them! Stay put, I’ll get out right now!
And Coco started pushing himself out with his hands. Lady was growling even louder…
Looloo, Marius, I’m stuck!! Get me out!!!
I was pulling on one leg, Marius on the other.
One, two, three...NOW! PULL!
We tried three times and then Coco barely made it out. He got away without Lady biting him, but he did get a couple of fleas, which he shared with the family, of course.
We understood then that we should have waited for the pups to come out on their own, when they would have been ready. We also understood that no matter how much Lady loved us, she loved her pups more.

“Nu, Luluta, cred că Fetița are puiuți!”
“Vaaaai, puiuți? Puiuți mici de tot? Hai să-i scoatem.”
Lasă-i în pace!”
