Past Tense #11: Did you ever hitch a ride on a speeding carriage?
Kids will sometimes try to show off, but it might be a painful experience...
(varianta în limba română, la final 1)
I was once upon a time a little girl, about whom you might have realised, from my stories so far, how “well-behaved” she was.
Spending time outside
I told you before how we played all sorts of games behind our building. But we got bored eventually, and then we’d go to the football field, that had a manual system to show the score of the game, and also had ladders and bars I would hang onto like a monkey, head down, seeing myself as Nadia Comăneci.
Or we’d take flasks of water to pour in the holes made by spiders so that they would come out. My big brother would catch them and put them in the “insectarium”. He did the same to large beetles and locusts, but those were more difficult to catch.
When we got bored of playing behind our building and wanted to “live dangerously”, we would go to other apartment buildings. There were, and still are, around 15 in all of Sascut, my home town, so we were close to home either way.
I remember I had received a pair of rollerblades, the ones with four wheels set up in a square on the bottom of the shoes, which were trending back in 1996. I used to share them with the other kids, even if they fit them or not. But we all shared everything, from food to toys.
Hitching a ride
That day I had given my rollerblades to Lavinia and, just when I was getting tired of running after her, I saw Mr Baciu coming my way, driving his horse and carriage. He had a big brown horse, with a white star on his forehead - a real and rare beauty. I thought I could just hitch a ride sitting on the “tail” of the carriage (a long wooden beam which actually stretched out for around one and a half or two meters behind the carriage). But I didn’t sit on it like all other kids used to do. I jumped on it while the carriage was passing me by, and then, unfortunately, I noticed that it had a very big nail hammered into it.
Mr Baciu was hurrying the horse, appearing to feel very upset with it:
Go, you sickness, go!
And then he would whip the horse and the horse would gallop on the cement blocks which were broken from place to place. They had rubble on them, and when the horse would gallop over it, all that rubble and dust would fly up behind it.
I wanted to show the others a new way to ride that wooden beam but, I don’t know why, each time you want to show off, something painful happens.
Painful (failed) show-off
When I got close to my “stop”, I stood up, pushing my feet to the ground, hoping that the tail would just pass in between my legs, but my jeans got stuck in that long nail that had been hammered to the end of the wooden beam, and the jeans got pulled down from my waist, leaving me to be actually sledded on the cement and rubble road, bare-bottomed, for about 10-15 meters.
I was popping up and down that road, screaming at the driver to stop the horse. But Mr Baciu did not hear me. All the other kids were screaming too, but he went on whipping the horse in a hurry, like a ghost that didn’t seem to hear anything.
My survival instinct kicked in and, with all my strength, I pushed myself up and pulled my jeans off the nail, falling then off the tail of the carriage. I was left on the ground, in the cloud of dust that formed behind the speeding carriage.
I don’t know how, but I got up so I wouldn’t get embarrassed in front of the other kids. I had bruises all over my back, my butt and my legs, but I didn’t cry until I got home and my mom poured some peroxide on my wounds and took out the small pieces of dirt and rubble from under my skin.
Could that have been the most painful experience of my childhood? I’m still thinking...
