An astronomic-scale event
I don't know what it was like for you, but in our country, in the countryside, when you heard that the circus was coming to town, it really was a phenomenon as huge as the eclipse. And I mean it when I say it: during my childhood, the Circus came twice, just like the solar and lunar events.
Note to my kid: So yes, Eva, if you’re going to ask me, I'm so old... from the time of the dinosaurs🤣.
The other day I was thinking about some new activity that I could come up with for us, and I saw the big ad: "Horse Cavalcade at the Metropolitan Circus".
It's the perfect time to see a real circus.
I hadn't been so excited since 25 years ago, when I had seen my first Circus show:
May, 1996. Great bustle in the halls of our school. Lots of children crowded in front of the announcement on school board:
The circus will come to our village, on Friday, May 10th, at 2 pm. There will be shows with ferocious animals, jugglers, the invincible man who spits flames, the man who swallows swords, illusionism and other magical moments. Do not miss!
Whaaat?! Do not miss..?? God forbid! Who would ever miss the event of the decade?!
Fierce animals...will there be tigers, lions, and people who put their heads in their mouths? Wooow!! How cool is that, I can't wait!!
And so my mind went on and on. I imagined what the Circus acts would look like, and even visualised them on the wall in my bedroom before going to bed.
Expectations
Time went by so slowly. I shared my impressions the next day, at school, with the other colleagues. Each one according to his own imagination.
Will they throw real knives?
Will they put flames in their mouths?
Will there be elephants too? What about snakes?
And that's how we went on and on from morning to night until the long-awaited day finally came!
I asked my father for Circus-money and I got to the Students' Club, the event’s venue which was also the gym, two hours before the opening of the show, so I would get good seats. Like me, there were many other children. Don't think that I was the only one excited…
The two hours passed slower than the whole week had until then.
Reality
We were all greeted by a gentleman with a mustache and a huge topper on his head:
Hi, kids! Welcome to the Circus! Tickets please and take a seat! We’ll be starting soon!
After he tore my ticket, I ran to get a seat in the first rows, making sure I’d be close to the tigers and lions. When the place was full of people, the show began.
The gentleman with the topper made the introductions and we were all watching with our eyes popping out, waiting to see what was coming up next.
He was surrounded by boxes covered with in blue canvas and questions began to appear in my mind.
Elephants don't fit in those boxes and they wouldn't be able to get in…
Tigers and lions also, not so much…
Where are the ferocious animals?!
The juggling act started and I was suddenly paying more attention…
Who is the juggler?
The gentleman with the topper, the one who greeted us, started throwing a few juggling clubs up in the air and them catching them again. Then he put a lot of colorful scarves in his topper and took them out knotted. Playing with his wand like a magician around the topper hat, he pulled out a rabbit and some pigeons. We all applauded, wondering how he had managed to do such a thing.
For the next act I need a volunteer!
A boy two years older than me stepped forward. The man put his scarves inside the boy’s pocket and then pulled them out all knotted. But this time, at the end of the knotted scarves there was also a pair of underwear! The boy blushed, and we all laughed.
The same gentleman drew a sword, which he then pushed inside his mouth all the way to the handle. We all looked at him, scared and amazed by this act, still waiting for other characters to appear.
Then there was a break, and we were all waiting excitedly for the next act ... the one with the man spitting flames.
The same topper-hatted gentleman showed up, this time without the topper hat, but with a special suit and a small bottle of water in his hand. He set fire to two sticks of wood that had their tips wrapped in some cloth and started by taking a mouthful from the plastic bottle, then blowing the liquid towards the two sticks forming large flames. We all “spit in our breast” in fear (old traditional way of keeping evil at bay), still waiting for the ferocious animals to show up.
The presenter / magician / man spitting fire and swallowing swords - all in one - announced:
The long awaited moment is coming!!! The tropical animal is here!
Stop! THE tropical animal? Just one?
Drums were beating, emotions were growing, my throat dried-up and, suddenly…the man took a monkey out of one of the cages, and the monkey somehow escaped and jumped from the improvised stage…straight to the top of my head!
Everyone laughed while I was trying to untangle the little monkey’s paws from my hair.
The long-awaited moment suddenly became an embarrassing one. But I survived the "ferocious animal", didn’t I?!
Do you like my stories? Then please…
…and spread the word!
…and help me grow this community!
Zilele treceau foarte greu.
Șiiii...ziua mult așteptată a venit!
A urmat o scurtă pauză.
