Past Tense #13: Improvised Gymnastics Went Wrong
Living in the countryside of Romania made kids improvise...a lot
(varianta în limba română, la final1)
In my childhood days of 1995 there were no automatic laundry dryers, but instead you had to take your freshly washed clothes outside and hang them to dry somewhere behind the apartment building, where some metal bars had wires stretched between them, from one end to the other of the garden at the ground floor. Also everybody had tied wires from one side to the other of the balcony. After 5 pm, when the women had returned home from work, all the wires were full. You could immediately see which one more hardworking than the other, depending on how white the clothes were as they hung on the wires.
“Beating the carpet”
It was during the Fast of the Holy Sea, and everyone was preparing for the feast of the village church. The women washed the windows and the men took the carpets out to the big metal bar behind the building and, as there was only one, they all started “hunting” for it since early in the morning so they could “beat the carpets” - that’s an ad literam translation by the way, but what it actually means is that they would use a special, tennis racket-like instrument, to take the dust out from the carpets, as not many people had vacuum cleaners back then...
The patron of the church, the Virgin Mary, is celebrated on August 15th, and the children anxiously awaited the arrival of the fair, with all sorts of games, ski lifts, bumper cars, chains, cotton candy and popcorn. We all would have liked to sleep there for three days, because the fair came only once a year.
As I had told you before, in some of my other stories, I was passionate about gymnastics. I used to love Nadia Comăneci, Gina Gogean, Simona Amânar and Lavinia Miloșovici (all Romanian gymnasts, all winning golden medals at the Olympics or international championships). I used to watch each gymnastics championship, but also the figure skating ones, with my eyes glued to the TV.
Improvised gymnastics
That day, the metal bar for dusting the carpets, which I was usually climbing on, was taken, so I had to find another one to practice my “jump”.
I tried each and every bar with wires for drying laundry, but they were all triangle-shaped and hurt the palms of my hands. At last I found only one that was round, but under it was a half a meter tall fence with its metal spikes pointing menacingly upwards.
I started the exercises, trying to keep my legs away from the fence, but it didn't take long and my hands slipped and I fell in some way that one spike from the fence pierced through my right thigh. I looked at how the iron came out on the other side of my leg, I pulled my leg away from the spike and walked to the base of the stairs of our apartment building. Only then did I actually realise what had happened to me and I started screaming until all our neighbours came out, and also my mother.
Today’s lesson, kids…
And after I thought it was all over after the disinfecting and dressing the wound, the hardest part was that I had to get the tetanus vaccine in my stomach...
So, kids, if you ever feel like pretending to be a gymnast, please try and find a safer spot than I did back then, and always make sure to have an adult there with you! Otherwise…you can end up really hurting yourselves, as I did! And tetanus vaccines in the stomach are not fun at all.
Do you like my stories? Then please…
…and spread the word!

Oh, Doamne ! Ce spaima am mai tras si atunci...
