(varianta în limba română, la final1)
One good morning, while our parents were off to work, auntie Lenutza, babysitter number 5, came to watch over us (she wasn’t really our aunt, but there’s no other way to translate how we called her, from Romanian so…auntie it is) . She was the only one who seemed capable of facing the three kids that were always up to something.
Auntie Lenutza was a very strict and serious woman, tough and with a firm grip on us, exactly what our parents thought we needed. They had been through all sorts of experiences, with all the women coming to babysit us leaving after two days…they suddenly fell ill, found some other work or found any other reason for which they couldn’t come anymore to look after us.
Auntie Lenutza, on the other hand, had already been with us for almost two weeks, and we didn’t seem to be able to make her leave anytime soon. She had raised naughtier children than us, and all were now all grown up with families of their own, so it seemed that she knew what she was doing.
We lived in our 3-room apartment, with the bedrooms facing towards the dispensary, and the kitchen and living room towards the back of the building. The bedroom we slept in had a big wardrobe, so tall that it reached the ceiling, an extendable sofa and some bookshelf that was fit on both sides of that sofa.
I was 5 at the time, Marius was 7 and Nicușor (Coco) was 10. As I told you before, Coco was the boss, the bravest and also the most restless. That day he thought that it was high time auntie Lenutza’s reign ended. He went to her, in the kitchen, and invited her to sit on a chair, like a young gentleman. Auntie Lenutza, feeling so proud of the educated kid standing in front of her, tried to sit down, but Coco pulled the chair from under her and I saw auntie Lenutza hitting the floor, on her back, legs up in the air and her gray cloche skirt covering half her face.
She got up and reached for the paddle for spreading dough. When we saw this, we ran and took shelter in our bedroom. Coco and Marius lifted me up on their shoulders and pushed me inside the wardrobe’s top shelf, then hid themselves inside the bottom part of that same wardrobe.
We then heard auntie Lenutza shouting:
“You’re mine now! I’ll get you for this! I’ll give you a proper scratching!”
You can imagine what that meant, her firmly gripping the wooden paddle in her hand.
I heard the door of the bedroom opening, and my heart was pounding in my chest as I watched her getting closer through the crack of the wardrobe’s door. When she reached for the lower door of the wardrobe, where my brothers were hiding, we started screaming and moving around, and the wardrobe fell, with us trapped inside.
Auntie Lenutza got away and was not hurt. We all were very lucky that the sofa had been extended and it broke the warderobe’s fall. She was so scared that she even forgot why she had been chasing us. She took us out of the wardrobe, and we haven’t seen her since.
I dedicate this story to my older brother. Happy birthday, Coco! Our childhood would have been too ordinary without you! I love you!
This was yet another story full of life learnings for kids, “Don’t do this at home!” being the catch phrase of the day. Don’t climb wardrobes! And if you do, don’t shake them. They can fall and hurt you very badly.
Take care!
Ioana
